Technique: Role Prompting (System Message)
Role prompting assigns a persona to the AI via the system message. When you tell the model “You are a senior database architect with 20 years of experience,” it adjusts its vocabulary, depth of explanation, and perspective accordingly. This is one of the highest-impact techniques for improving response quality.
The system prompt is separate from the user prompt — it sets the context and behavioral guidelines before the conversation begins. Think of it as hiring a specialist: you tell them who they are, then ask your question. Research shows that role-prompted responses consistently outperform generic responses in domain-specific tasks.
When to use: Any domain-specific question, technical consultations, creative writing from a specific perspective, or when you need the depth and nuance of an expert opinion rather than a generic overview.
