Chain of thought (CoT) prompting is one of the most powerful techniques in the prompt engineering toolkit. By asking models to show their reasoning step by step, CoT dramatically improves accuracy on complex reasoning tasks.
The technique works because it forces the model to decompose problems into smaller, manageable steps rather than attempting to jump directly to an answer. This decomposition reduces errors and makes the reasoning process transparent and verifiable.
There are several variants of CoT prompting. Zero-shot CoT simply adds a phrase like “think step by step” to the prompt. Few-shot CoT provides example reasoning chains for the model to follow. Self-consistency runs multiple CoT paths and takes the majority answer.
CoT is most effective for mathematical reasoning, logical deduction, multi-step planning, and any task where intermediate reasoning steps improve the final answer quality.
